Is MMS what I need?

I am beginning a project and I am not sure if MMS is what I need.

Is there a technology that allows one to send a media files (such as color picture or mp3 ringtone) embedded into a text message. I would like to figure out how to do this as opposed to sending a link to where the file is stored on a server.

If I create my own server full of the media I want to supply, can I send it directly to a client? (Bypassing 3rd party providers?)

Any help on this would mean ALOT
